Preparing for Italy

Excited!!

As we begin to prepare for the trip, I am filled with so many emotions. Happy, nervous, excited, and worrisome. I have never traveled to Europe before, or anywhere far from the US, which I am sure is true for many other PLU students that are going to Italy too. While feeling nervous of unknown experiences, still, I am thankful to be able to join this journey with these amazing people and to experience new places and moments. This is a great way to start off the new year!

While the jet lag is not something that I am particularly looking forward to (haha) I am ecstatic that we will be exploring many regions across the country. I am particularly excited to be exploring Pompeii and the beautiful country sides. I expect to meet many amazing locales, including our guide, as well as gain a better perspective of Italian culture and the current society's perspectives of their country and the world. I am looking forward to this adventure and gaining a more worldly perception (and of course, eating some INCREDIBLE food). :)

As I finish packing, the reality sets in that I am saying goodbye to America, and hello to Italy!! Ahhh. My previous travels have taken me to Asia and Africa, but I have yet to really explore Europe. I cannot wait to find myself in a gondola in the canals of Venice or walking among the lemon orchards in Amalfi. Beyond the beautiful scenery of Italy, I am excited to dive into the real themes of this course, History of Gender, Economic, and Environmental Development in Italy . An Italian Fantasy

My expectations for Italy 🇮🇹 Italy is everybody’s dream country shoot even Kourteny Kardashian stole Kim Kardashian’s Wedding country!  Growing up watching Italy through the movies the scenery was always very romantic and warm. All of my friends warned me about the monuments there. I am here to visit places that were in my bucket list for a very long time. I have high expectations for Italy, I saved reels of places and small things to do while I’m here during my free time. Here is how I expect it to go and what I expect to do in my free time. Florence:  I expect to visit the oldest perfumery Official Di Santa Maria Novella. This place has been crafting perfume for almost 800 years using the fines row ingredients. My goal is to visit and bring a perfume for mom and myself. The second stop, is to visit Buchetta del Vino; the wine window this is an iconic thing to do in Florence they also have non-alcoholic alternatives as well. The Fragile Relationship Between Humans and Natural Spaces

A Terraced Hillside on the Amalfi Coast A Terraced Lemon Grove On January 16th, we discussed various environmental aspects of Italy. On this day, we focused on readings detailing the culture and environment surrounding olive production, some important issues concerning sustainable farming, and rural landscapes of historical interest. These topics made me reflect on many of the site visits that we have had throughout our time in Italy. For example, while reading the article about sustainable farming, I reflected on the times that we witnessed these practices and the effects of climate change when we took tours through the olive grove, the lemon orchard, and the sheep farm. During our visits to these sites, we witnessed the beautiful and often fragile relationship between human cultivation/development and the natural environment.
